Notes Specific to Developer Release

New Features

The following new features have been added to the NetInfoManager application since Developer Release 1:

Configuring a 2-level network

The following instructions assume that you are starting from a clean install on a machine. If otherwise, boot up in single-user mode and remove /etc/netinfo, /etc/hostconfig and /etc/iftab; copy in the default templates for each of these files from /usr/template/client/etc.

  1. When the Setup Assistant is launched by default, enter the various settings and select "no, let me configure the network connection" when prompted in the Network Connection panel. Click the right arrow to continue.

  2. In the IP Address panel select the "Assign IP address Manually" option and click the right arrow to continue.
  3. In the IP Address Configuration panel enter the IP address, subnet mask, router address and hostname and click the right arrow to continue
  4. In the NetInfo panel, select "No" when prompted with "Do you want to use NetInfo"; this response prevents the local domain from trying to bind to its (nonexistent) parent domain at startup. Continue with the remainder of the setup panels and restart the computer when finished.
  5. Log n as root and Launch NetInfoManager. Select "Manage Domain Hierarchy" item from the Domain menu. Select the "create new master on this host" button and press the Configure... button. This brings up the Make Master panel, there are two additional options provided in this panel.
  6. Click on the Create button and wait for the new master to be created.
NOTE : You must restart the host machine directly after creating a new master before any other configuration is performed.
  7. Add in other client machine entries using the NetworkManager.

Clone Creation

Depending on the size of domain's and the speed of network connectivity, clone creation may take some time as databases are re-synchronized.

Footnotes

The "Limit access to administrative data to the local network" option allows the user to limit access in the new domain to machines in specific subnets. This subnet depends on on the server's IP address and netmask setting, which is stored in the "trusted_networks" property in the root directory of the new domain.

The "Maintain the network's e-mail server" feature is not functional in this release.
